Favourite Pictures of 2009

without comments

I was looking over the photos I took in 2009  and thought it might be nice to add a few of my favourites to a set on Flickr. The ones I chose aren’t necessarily the best shots from the year but the ones that remind of the year just gone.  Here’s why I picked the ones I did…

The first two were taken on a trip back down to Brighton for a night out with my mates. The first couldn’t have come out better if I’d posed it, and the second is another that really reminds me of an excellent night out and mates I don’t see as often as I should.

The next two were taken at The Great Escape festival which was a brilliant few days. The first comes from an amazing set by the Canadian band ”Ultimate Power Duo” and really sums up their frenetic energy and I really like the way the lighting has worked. This one was taken at my favourite gigs of the whole festival, a frantic and frankly quite mental set from Juliette Lewis & The New Romantiques. It’s taken from quite near the back of the Concorde2 with a pretty long lens and captures Lewis in a rare moment of relative calm.

This shot is taken from the Paddock Hill grandstand at Brands Hatch. It’s of a Ford Escort MK1 & Aston Martin DB4 fighting hard as they exit Paddock Hill bend. It was taken during one of the support races at the UK round of the A1 GP championships and really sums up what I like about watching motor racing, especially at Paddock Hill.
The next shot was taken on a sunny Sunday afternoon over the summer when I was walking along the South Bank. A bunch of BMXrs were showing of their skills and drawing quite an audience, but this guy was pretty exceptional. To be honest, the fact this his face was in sharp focus was pretty much a fluke. Nevermind though. Why did I pick it? I just really like the South Bank in summer.
Back to the track for this picture, but this time its Luffield at Silverstone. It shows former F1 and Indy Car world champion Nigel Mansell demonstrating his donut skills in his sons Renault World Series car. This little display capped of an excellent (and free) VIP day of motor racing. I’m already looking forward to getting back to Silverstone for the 2010 event, although sadly I’m sure there won’t be any VIP hospitality this year.

The final picture was taken in Arsenal’s fantastic Emirates Stadium and I’ve included it as it was this trip to watch the Gunners knock West Brom out of the Carling Cup that persuaded me to open my wallet and fork over a not inconsiderable sum of money for a season ticket.

Any feedback on the pictures would be great, and if you’ve got your favourites from last year, it would be great to see them.
